The Short Story
Mark Lewis is an award-winning portrait photographer based in the Bath area with over 25 years experience of working with film and digital capture to produce timeless, visceral images.
In 2013, building on his own experience of what a photographer needs from their kit he founded 1901 fotografi, a photography accessories brand producing beautifully simple, hard-wearing straps and camera bags for the discerning photographer.
Alongside the development of the refined ‘1901’ range of products Mark’s own adventure with photography continues through portrait commissions, teaching and personal projects.
Mark was eighteen in 1988 when he first picked up a 1950's large format press camera and decided to teach himself photography from scratch. He has been taking photographs ever since. Searching for the 'decisive moment' among the many ordinary possibilities.
Between 1996 - 2009 Mark ran Criterion, an award-winning photographic portrait studio in the city of Bath. His work during this time garnered 14 industry recognised distinctions across his photography and darkroom printing.
In 2009 Mark closed the studio and took some time to study 'the great photographers' and immerse himself in historical photographic processes. Re-invigorated by this sabbatical he now concentrates on '1901' offering portrait photography, teaching and photographic products.
